Meet Grainne McGuire – new Fellow
Following a stint as a backpacker in New Zealand and Australia, I completed my Actuarial training in 2005 in Australia, working with Taylor Fry. My main working areas are in general insurance, government and data analytics. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to work in New Zealand, spending quite a bit of time in Wellington.
I’m also interested in research, most recently on the use of machine learning in reserving. Outside of actuarial work I enjoy experimenting with gluten free sour dough baking, reading and travelling.
Meet Kristee Hardacre – new Fellow
Like many people in New Zealand, I had no idea what an actuary was growing up, so it was never on my radar as a potential career path. After doing 2 years of medical school, I worked out I actually hate blood, so changed to a Maths and Stats degree instead. My aunty first told me about the wonderful world of actuaries and it seemed like a pretty good fit for me, so after finishing university I started my first graduate job with Finity in Auckland.
My favorite part of my actuarial career has been all the awesome people I’ve got to work with during my various roles at Finity, Southern Cross, Suncorp and now ACC in Wellington. Passing that final exam was a huge relief, especially as I was 8 months pregnant at the time! (Though as workmates were quick to point out, I was cheating with 2 brains…). I was hugely looking forward to all that spare time I would have once study was over, but now of course that’s all taken up by the little one running around!
After escaping lockdown in Auckland last year, I’m now enjoying getting to know my new home of Wellington with my partner Sam (also an actuary), our daughter and our retired racing greyhound Inca.
