Hosted by the General Insurance Committee, this webinar will be presented by James Russell and Dr Maxim Millen of Tonkin + Taylor.

The session will introduce the engineering perspective on natural hazard risk, highlighting where engineering and actuarial expertise intersect. Using examples such as the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence and the recently released National Liquefaction Model, the presenters will demonstrate how engineering insights are helping shape understanding of risk and resilience.
The session will also explore how combining engineering and actuarial perspectives can support better decision-making for insurers, government, and communities. The webinar is intended to start a conversation about areas of shared interest between the actuarial and engineering professions including meaningful research and practical tools for communities that support decision -making. Depending on member interest, it may lead to future collaborative initiatives aligned with the NZSA Strategy.
