Sessional Meeting – Sustainable Intelligence: The Actuary’s Role in an AI-Driven Future
October 20 at 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
AI is transforming how we work, make decisions, and solve problems. But at what cost – and how can we use it responsibly? Join us for a thought-provoking session exploring AI’s environmental and societal impacts, and the role actuaries play in shaping its responsible and sustainable use.
Date: Tuesday, 20 October 2026
Time: 5-6pm NZDT
Location: Virtual
Format: Short presentations, panel discussion and Q&A
We’ll examine the environmental footprint of AI – including energy and water consumption, rare minerals and land use – alongside its societal consequences, from job displacement and skills erosion to cybersecurity, reliance on automated tools and rogue AI agents.
Discussion will focus on how actuaries can:
– Preserve human judgement, expertise, and professional capacity.
– Use AI efficiently, including smarter, lower-energy queries.
– Strengthen governance and manage emerging risks.
– Safeguard the public interest through responsible and ethical AI adoption.
We’ll challenge assumptions, share practical ideas, and consider how to harness AI’s benefits while managing its risks.
Our speakers:
Adam Follington and Scott Lewis – Actuate
Nicolette Rubinsztein – non-executive director in the finance industry, Chair of CBHS and Greenpeace Australia Pacific, and former President of the Actuaries Institute (2019)
We look forward to seeing you there.
